Keyword Intelligence

by TIM MCLENDON

Keywords are important part of pay per click advertising programs, whether you are a program affiliate or an advertiser. Essentially, with pay per click advertising programs, you are relying on keywords to bring you success. That is why you should carefully choose your keywords. In addition to carefully choosing your keywords, you should also make sure that the keywords you chose are successful or living up to your standards. You can do this by testing and tracking all of your keywords.

Before examining how both affiliates and advertisers can go about testing and tracking their keywords, it is important that you understand why testing and tracking is important. Pay per click advertising costs money, granted it only costs when one of your ads has been clicked, but it is still money. Any good business owner wants to know exactly where their money is going, as they should. The testing and tracking of keywords will not only help to ensure that you are not wasting money, but it will also let you know if you are making any. Keyword tracking and testing will also let you know if you are wasting your time.

Now that you know why it is important to test and track your keywords, you can better understand how to do so. As it was mentioned above, both advertisers and affiliates are urged to test and track their keywords. Affiliates need to test and track because it will help them determine exactly how much money they are making, as well as how much money they are not making or could be making. Affiliates rely on their website’s content to show relevant advertisements. For that reason, if you are an affiliate, your content needs to contain popular keywords, keywords that would likely be associated with pay per click advertisements. Google Adsense gives affiliates updated tracking information; information that you can use to determine your success with particular keywords.

In addition to using the information that is supplied to you by your pay per click program, you can also perform your own test. You can do so by visiting your online website. Take a look at the advertisements that are appearing on your page. When doing so, it is important that you look, don’t click. You can easily get an idea as to what keywords are associated with those advertisements. To see how much money you may be making, you will want to use Overture’s keyword worth tool, which can be found at http://uv.bidtool.overture.com/d/USm/search/tools/bidtool/. The higher the maximum bids are, the more money you are likely to make.

If you are an advertiser, not an affiliate, you can still benefit from testing and tracking your keywords. Unlike affiliates, who rely on content keywords, your keywords will essentially be attached to your advertisements. That is how pay per click programs decide which websites your advertisements will appear on. As for tracking, your pay per click program should also provide you with information, such as information on which one of your ads was clicked. If you are using multiple keywords for multiple advertisements, you can compare them to see which one is the better money-maker.

As for testing your keywords, you will want to perform a standard internet search, preferably with the keywords or keywords phrases that you selected. You will want to examine popular, high ranking web pages. To determine if your chosen keywords are being used to the best of their ability, you should be able to find a few of your advertisements displayed on affiliate pages. If you are unable to do so, it might be a sign that you need to reexamine your pay per click advertising keywords.

Whether you are an advertiser or an affiliate, you are urged to track and test your keywords to see if they are producing results. By taking the above mentioned approaches, keyword tracking and testing should only take a few minutes of your time, but it will be time well spent.

"Simple Steps to a Search Engine Friendly Site"

by KYM MCLAUGHLIN

Is your site "Search Engine Friendly"? This is a term heard often when dealing with search engine optimization or online marketing plans. What does it mean? What makes a site search engine friendly?

A search engine friendly site simply stated means creating a site that can be indexed easily and effectively by the search engines. However, there are many aspects in the design of a site that can hinder it from being effectively indexed by the search engines

It is a common myth that a site needs be all text and links to be considered search engine friendly. This is not the case at all. Websites can use Flash, Java Script and graphics and still be search engine friendly.

It is not what you use; it is how you use it that will make the difference. In order to combine popular design features and still maintain a search engine friendly site, here are some important components to consider.

Can Search Engines Crawl Through Your Site?

Once the search engines have found your site, can they find the other (inner) pages of the site as well? There are many design features that can stop a search engine dead in its tracks and stop the search engine robots from seeing any further than the front page of the site.

One of the most common occurrences is the use of Java Script navigation systems, more specifically the use of dynamic menus. Search engines, in general, can not read the links in these types of navigation systems. This is not to suggest that sites should not use Java Script. There are ways to work around these issues, such as provide an alternate route for the search engines to follow. One of the most common “work arounds” is to create text links at the bottom of the page, or create a site map with text links that will allow the search engines the ability to index the interior pages of the site. Session IDs or cookies can also stop search engines from crawling your site. If session IDs or cookies are used, make certain they are not required for crawling.

Another common “stop sign” for search engines are all Flash sites. If the front page of a site is in Flash, it should have navigation of the site in HTML with text links, and content that reflects the purpose of the site. Many search engines can not read the text that is contained in Flash. If all of the text and navigation are in Flash, it will prevent search engines from finding the information within the site. The ideal Flash site is a combination of Flash and HTML text.

If you have concerns that Flash or other features might be affecting the ability of the search engines to crawl your site, consider using a text browser such as Lynx to examine your site. If you are unable to view your entire site because of these features, then the search engines might have a problem seeing your site well.

Content Is Still King!

Over the years the internet has experienced many changes. However, there is one thing that remains the same. Content is King. Search engines are not looking at the graphics on sites, they are looking for content. That doesn’t mean that you have to do away with the graphics on your site in order to have a search engine friendly site. Content rich text and graphics can live in complete harmony on a web page. But, you must have good (great) content on your site that best describes what you want to convey to your targeted audience.

First and foremost, make sure you write the content of the site for your audience, not the search engines. Present the information about your services or products in natural language. Determine who your targeted audience is, research what they want and give it to them. Be creative in describing your business; make your site stand out. This is where a good search engine optimization copywriter can make your site stand head and shoulders above the rest of the crowd. Having keyword rich content that is written for the end user and not search engines is vital to the effectiveness of your site.

Are Title Tags And Meta Description Tags Necessary?

Title tags and meta descriptions tags are not only necessary, they are a very important part of how a site is indexed by the search engines. Use unique title tags and meta description tags on each page of your site. Each page of your site offers different topic specific information about your company. The same needs to be done with title tags and meta description tags. The title tag specifically is one the most important elements that a search engine will look at when crawling your site. It is crucial to your optimization efforts to use relevant keywords in your title tags. The meta description tag is not usually displayed in the SERPs (Search engine Result Pages) however, the information is still indexed by the search engines, and it is important to have a keyword rich description that is unique to each page of your site.

Make Your Site Known to the Search Engines

The most successful way to be included in search engines like Google and Yahoo is to have a site that is already listed in the search engines link to your site. The search engines will then find your link, visit your site and add it to their index.

One of the most effective ways to do this is to submit your site to frequently crawled directories. A few things to consider when submitting to directories are to make sure that you are submitting to quality sites. A few indicators to look for are: When was the directory last cached by Google? What is the directory’s Alexa rating? Is it showing up in the SERPs? What are the ad ratios? Do they have quality sites? Is the directory geared to your end user? You can also ask your site designer or anyone working with your site to add your link to their site in their portfolio or client listings.

However, sometimes the search engines will miss your link, so it is good idea to submit your top pages (two or three pages max) that best describes your site. Avoid automated programs, some provide excellent services, however the major search engines are far too important to take any chances with. Submit your site manually so that you are aware of any problems that might be reported.

In conclusion, the basic fundamentals of achieving a search engine friendly site is to create a website that can be found easily by the search engines without placing obstacles in the coding of the site that will prevent the search engines from being able to see your site. Each page of your site should be exclusive to a specific topic, service or product, with an easy to follow, well developed navigational system. The more unique pages of a site that are targeted to your specific industry will significantly increase the visibility of the site with the search engines.

Common SEO Mistakes in Web Promotion

by RAJEEV GUGLANI

Website promotion requires certain basics. People often commit common mistakes while promoting their websites. Such SEO mistakes can be avoided or corrected if little care is taken about it. Some of these mistakes are listed as under-

Target the wrong keywords

People often make and define the wrong keywords that are not at all searched. So proper keyword analysis should be done. Wrong keywords take you no where. Your Search Engine Optimization Company becomes successful only on choosing the right keywords.

Ignore the title tag

Search Engines give more preference to title tag these days rather than other Meta tags. Some people leave this tag empty. In fact title tag is the most important place to have keywords. This affects your search results as page title does not exist when you ignore this title tag.

Flash website without html

Flash is attractive only to the users but not to the search engine spiders. If you make a flash website to attract the users and strictly want to promote it in search engines then it is better to provide the alternative html version along with it. As search engines can not read the flash content and also not able to index it, so it becomes necessary to create the html version.

Use JavaScript Menus

Search engine do not read the JavaScript. In case you think it is necessary to use it in the website, you should build a site map. You can also build a no script tag. This will make your links get easily crawl by search engine spiders.

Too much concentration on Meta tags

Search engines these days do not give much preference to the Meta tags as it was in the past. You can not ignore the Meta tags but don't spend too much time on it and think to rank well only because of this. These days there are various other promotion methods also available along with the content optimization.

Back link spamming

Back links are always considered as good but people resort to the practices of collecting back links through link farms which could get your site banned. Do not emphasize on quantity of back links rather than the quality links. It's the quality that counts in the end.

Lack of keywords in the content

Some people write the content which has no keywords. These days search engines give more preference to content rather than to Meta tags. So content mixed along with keywords has become important part of content optimization. Use only images for headings

Many people use images in headings with the concept of making an attractive site but in Search Engine Optimization terms images in headings and menus proves to be a big mistake. H1, H2 tags and menu links are important Search Engine Optimization Items which must contain the important keywords or alternative tags in images.

Ignore Urals

Some people define the URL without any idea. Define the keywords in the URL. This will give you additional preference over your competitors. Keyword in URL is more important in Yahoo and MSN but Google also gives preference to it when the relative weight of keyword is high.

Effective Search Engine Optimization

by WILLIAM BENT

5 Basic Rules of Search Engine Optimization

Search engine optimization is crucial for anyone who wants people to visit his or her Web site. You can place as many ads as you like, but most people are still going to find your site because of its listings in search engines or directories.

Search engine optimization is the process of making web pages attractive to search engines. In my work, I visit hundreds of web sites every month. Sadly, many of them are throwing traffic away; they look fine to the viewer, but ignore the basics of effective search engine optimization.

It's a fact that most people who use search engines only look at the first one or two page of search listings. The goal of effective search engine optimization is to get your pages listed on those critical first pages for particular key terms.

How do you do this?

1) Remember that each page of your site is a separate entity.

2) Choose appropriate key words or phrases for each page. For instance, although this page is part of the Small Business: Canada site, that's not one of the key phrases I've chosen for search engine optimization. (If you've read this far, I bet you already know what the main key word phrase of this page is!)

Phrasing matters. Many more people search for the term "effective search engine optimization" than for "effectively optimizing for search engines". To find out which key words or phrases are more popular than others, you can use a tool such as Overture's Search Term Suggestion Tool; enter your chosen phrases and you'll see how many people searched for that term recently.

3) Give each page an appropriate title that includes the key word or phrase at least once. I so often see sites that use the name of their business as the title of all their pages. Is every page of their site about their business? Probably. But chances are really low that people will be searching for their business' name!

4) Put the key words or phrase that you've chosen in the page's title tag, meta keywords, and meta description. Make sure that the meta description is as appealing as possible, because some search engines actually use this description in the search engine results pages that people will be reading.

5) Be sure your chosen key words or phrase is repeated judiciously throughout the content of the page. You don't want to overdo it, or your page may be rejected as spam, but you need to repeat it enough times that the search engine's software will consider the phrase relevant.

As anyone in the business will tell you, these are the barebones basics of effective search engine optimization. But applying just these five basic rules of search engine optimization will give your web pages a much better chance of showing up on those critical first few pages of returned results.
